How to enable Chrome Developer mode

Why it is required
Chrome will install extensions from the Web Store without any special setting. It will not install one from a folder on your disk unless you explicitly allow it, and Developer mode is that permission.
The reason is straightforward. Web Store extensions have been through a review process; a folder on your computer has not. Rather than quietly treating both the same, Chrome makes you turn on a visible switch first, so nothing can install itself from disk without your knowledge.
SwapCam is distributed as a ZIP you download and extract yourself, so it falls on the second side of that line. The switch is a consequence of how the extension is distributed, not a sign that something is being worked around.
What the setting does and does not do
- It does let you load extensions from a folder. That is its entire purpose, and it is what SwapCam needs.
- It does not install anything by itself. Turning it on changes nothing until you choose a folder and load it.
- It does not lower Chrome’s other protections. Site permissions, sandboxing and safe browsing are unaffected.
- It does not bypass extension permissions. Chrome still shows what an extension is asking for, and you should still read it.
Turning it on
Open the Extensions page

The toggle sits in the top-right corner of the page. Turning it on reveals a row of buttons — Load unpacked, Pack extension and Update — directly beneath the page header.
Load the extension folder
Choose Load unpacked and select your extracted SwapCam folder — the one that directly contains
manifest.json. Selecting a parent folder that merely contains that folder is the usual cause of a manifest error here.A SwapCam card should appear in the list with its toggle on. The installation guide covers this step in more detail.

Turning it off later
You can switch Developer mode off from the same toggle. Be aware of what that means for SwapCam: Chrome will typically disable extensions loaded from disk when the mode is off, so SwapCam will stop working until you turn it back on.
If you want SwapCam gone entirely, remove it from the Extensions page first and then delete the extracted folder. Turning off Developer mode alone does not uninstall anything.
Staying sensible about it
The genuine risk with unpacked extensions is not the setting — it is loading a folder you have not vetted. Only load extensions from sources you trust, look at the folder contents before you load it, and read the permissions Chrome shows you. That advice applies to SwapCam as much as to anything else you install this way.
